Space Between: Tropes of Mixedness in Contemporary Mixed Race Literature

Seminar, one hour. Survey of contemporary mixed race literature to examination what mixed-race literature is, and what implications of presentations of mixedness they contain. Focus on difficulties of defining mixed race literature, exploration of scholarship surrounding presentations of mixedness, and presentation of brief contextual history of mixedness in U.S. Addresses topics of binary versus fluid representations of mixed identity; mixed characters' association with tragedy; mixed people as symbols for better world, as shapeshifters, as cultural bridges; as metaphors for cultural crossings; and how mixedness can be associated with alienation. Critical frameworks are provided through which to analyze and critique representations of mixedness in readings. P/NP grading. Facilitated by Emily Kim, with Caroline A. Streeter as faculty mentor.
