Covering COVID-19: Science Journalism, Public Health, and Society
Seminar, one hour. As businesses closed during pandemic, individuals looked increasingly to online and digital sources for up-to-date information on COVID-19. Examination of pandemic-era journalism and related efforts to communicate scientific developments to public. Focus on complex process of translating and interpreting scientific research to lay audiences, role experts play in that process, various intersecting priorities among all stakeholders (e.g., news outlets, public health officials, and general public), and effort of combating health misinformation. Focus on recent pandemic reality with interdisciplinary lens. P/NP grading. Facilitated by Victoria Li, with Michelle A. Rensel as faculty mentor.
