Professor Tamai was great-- super understanding and passionate about the material she was teaching. Since this class happened online due to the pandemic, she didn't have a midterm for us. You're required to do the readings before discussion every week (since you will discuss them in your discussion section). The readings are pretty lengthy; however, Professor Tamai knows this and even suggests that you just read the intro, conclusion, and the topic sentences of each paragraph in between to understand the reading. However, if you have the time to read more, I would highly suggest it because the material is really interesting especially if you come from the Asian American community. I am so glad I took this class because I learned more about the past and present history of my Asian American community and so many others!
This class was super easy, I barely paid attention to the lectures (which were online). Although if you do pay attention, the prof is clearly very passionate about the subject, so a lot of what she went over was very interesting to learn. Discussion sections were mandatory, but the discussions got pretty interesting.
Professor Tamai is incredibly kind and accommodating and managed to keep the class going even through the TA strike. The lectures were very interesting, and while there is a lot of reading every week, you're expected to skim them. Overall, the work is pretty light with only one 6-page paper for the midterm and another paper for the final.
This was my first GE at UCLA and Dr. Tamai genuinely made me want to get out of bed to go listen to her lectures in person (even though she did have a zoom option) as she was so funny and the most amazing lecturer. Grading was very fair and she was extremely reasonable due to the TA strike that went on. She made me really enjoy the course and I hope I have her again for another class in the future
Tamai is a great professor. Must take class
#RealRating For this class, you will have to show up for every lecture since her PowerPoint are not posted, and they will be very helpful for your final. The main part of the class will be a presentation in your discussion, which is pretty easy, I think. Then, you have an essay that you can write on any topic you want. I recommend writing on something modern because your final will cover more historical topics that you won't be able to use if you write about them in your first paper. There are no tests, and the final is a take-home essay that Tamai gives you an entire weekend to complete. This class is full of supportive people, and they want you to succeed. At the end of the class, you are able to write an evaluation of what grade you think you deserve and they actually take your opinion into consideration. Summary: I definitely recommend this class if you want an easy GE (there are easier ones, but I found this class especially rewarding), and I also think that you will definitely learn something new. If you are an Asian you may even take something extra away from the class.
