Survey of Asian American literature either produced from or thematically reflecting pre-1980 period. Issues include immigration, diaspora, generational conflict, appropriation of cultural traditions, ethnic/gender formation, interethnic dynamics, and social movement. Works by such authors as Edith Eaton, Younghill Kang, Carlos Bulosan, Hisaye Yamamoto, John Okada, Frank Chin, and Maxine Hong Kingston. P/NP or letter grading.
