Introduction to Probability and Statistics 1: Probability
Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Requisite: course 32B. Highly recommended: course 61 or 70. Not open to students with credit for course 170A, Electrical and Computer Engineering 131A, or Statistics 100A. Introduction to probability theory with emphasis on topics relevant to applications. Topics include discrete (binomial, Poisson, etc.) and continuous (exponential, gamma, chi-square, normal) distributions, bivariate distributions, distributions of functions of random variables (including moment generating functions and central limit theorem). P/NP or letter grading.

Very enjoyable! Highly recommend for prep in ML, DS, Statistics, or any other concept that requires probability. For Spring 2021, there were long projects that required some coding instead of exams which were a bit tedious but pretty helpful for testing our knowledge. This may change in future quarters since I took it during the pandemic. Lectures were very good and fun and homework was heavy (she eased up at the end). 5/5
This class is run differently from a typical math class. It was a flipped class room, so pre-recorded lectures posted online, and the actual class time was run more like office hours. However, attendance is part of the grade, so you still have to attend class.
There were no midterms or final exams. Instead, we had two mini-projects that involved both written responses as well as a coding aspect (eg. Matlab, Python). There were supposed to be treated like exams, so no collaboration. Additionally there are weekly homework assignments and short quizzes.
Overall the class was a lot of work during the quarter, but the grade is distributed among many assignments. Professor Needell's lectures are solid. Overall would recommend the class.
