Lecture, one hour; laboratory, three hours; outside study, eight hours. Enforced requisite: course 101A. Recommended: course 170A or Bioengineering C170. Introduction to measurement of basic photonic devices, including LEDs, lasers, detectors, and amplifiers; fiber-optic fundamentals and measurement of fiber systems. Modulation techniques, including AM, FM, phase and suppressed carrier methods. Possible projects include lasers, optical communication, and biomedical imaging and sensing.
