This class with Kao, I would rank as one of the top I've taken at UCLA. This was the first time he taught signals and systems, but he came into class very well prepared every single day. He really cared about making sure everyone understands the material best they can by giving a lot of intuition to the things he's teaching, and he mentioned how when he was an undergrad he did badly on the first midterm due to a lack of intuitive understanding. He also tends to mention how he uses the tools in 102 in his own work in neural prostheses, which is actually super cool to hear about.
There was a small pacing problem near the beginning of the class, because he would answer everyone's question in detail even though that's literally the next slide, but he later corrected that issue. Homework was challenging but doable – which to be honest is what should be the case. The grading curve was very lenient and he is committed to give everyone as high a grade as possible.
Basically, Kao is the best professor to take 102 with.
Great class with an amazing professor. He really cares about student learning and is a funny and engaging lecturer. After the midterm, he announced that he would add another grading scheme allowing you to replace your midterm grade with your final grade if you performed better (which was great for me as someone who did below average on the midterm). Also, Kao frequently answered Piazza questions, which I really appreciated.
The homework was definitely a bit challenging, so start early enough that you have time to ask questions.
Very fair and passionate instructor, highly recommend.
Most accommodating upper division professor I've had so far, goes above and beyond to clarify difficult topics, record lectures and provide office hours. Would recommend this prof 10/10.
Professor Kao is an amazing professor and he was always super clear and helpful. The TAs were also extremely helpful. Tests were pretty fair if you went to lecture and did homework.
This was one of my favorite classes at UCLA. Professor Kao is an engaging and brilliant lecturer, he always tries to explain concepts in ways that we'll understand. He always understands and ANSWERS our questions, which is something I never thought I'd have to point out. The midterm and final are difficult, which is a reflection of the material, but Kao and the TAs provide plenty of resources, office hours, and review sessions to help prepare us.
Jonathan Kao is my favorite professor at UCLA. Highly recommend this organized, fair, and passionate lecturer.
prof kao is such a good professor, always answering questions and ensuring lots of resources are available to study for exams. the final exam was really difficult though.
Failed due to health reasons, professor was really good
Not an easy class by any measure, but incredibly useful with applications all across ECE. Very math heavy but Kao derives formulas pretty clearly and teaches with visualizations which are very useful.
