Amazing lecturer (one of the best STEM teachers). It is a hard class so you have to put a lot of time into practice problems and studying but he provides resources that seriously help! Midterms and finals were definitely challenging, but doable if you studied.
This might be a hot take, but I absolutely loved this class. Professor Lavelle isn't the best at explaining things, but if you read over the textbook, it really helps. In terms of his midterms and finals, he likes to put a lot of conceptual questions on there and also some questions that are very similar to those in the textbook. I basically read all the textbook sections, and I was able to perform well on the tests. This class can be very daunting, but it will be fine as long as you know how to study for the exams.
Definitely a hard class and Lavelle's midterms and wording are definitely tricky. But, practice problems are key to his class and his tests.
this class was very practice problem heavy. when i was taking it, all his exams were multiple choice, which meant no partial credit on exams....he also went over more derivations (although that was not tested) than practice problems.
Labella is a good teacher, but his tests are really tough in my opinion. He also doesn’t really curve much. His finals are all multiple choice which makes it more difficult to be honest.
Very fair class. I had taken 14A 3 quarters ago, but Lavelle does a good job summarizing relevant past topics so that everyone is more or less on the same level - although definitely take the two back to back if possible. Midterm questions were directly discussed in hw or lecture, and there is a forum online which Lavelle set up where you can get help with any of the problems. Would take the class with him again.
Bit of a shame that he doesn't publish lecture slides, but exams weren't that bad and I ended with an A. He did curve me up at least 1.2% though, so just to keep in mind.
This is a pretty hard class. The midterm 1 was pretty chill and that is where you should try to give yourself some wiggle room because the material for the second midterm is insanely difficult in comparison (I am taking it in 1 day). Thermochem is a bizzzz. I don't really know what to expect on the final, but according to Lavelle there is going to be more challenging questions. Also, his tests have reverted back to free response with a bit of multiple choice so it might be easier or harder depending on how you like to do you tests.
