Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Exploration of physical climate system and its variability, carbon cycle and related biogeochemistry and ecosystem processes, land-use change, urbanization, and interactions among ecosystems, climate, biogeochemistry, and impact of global change on societally relevant issues and concerns. Global change ecology is field at interface between ecological systems and all aspects of environmental change that affects substantial part of globe. Focus on use of observations and models, consideration of multiple scales of change (temporal and spatial), interaction of human behaviors and choices with natural systems, and linkages across different aspects of global change science. Letter grading.
