Engineering Geology: Geologic Principles for Engineers
Lecture, four hours; outside study, eight hours. Requisite: course 120. Engineering geology involves interpretation, evaluation, analysis, and application of geologic information and data to civil works. Topics include geologic characterization and classification of soil and rock units. Relationships developed between landforms, active, past, and ancient geologic processes, ground and surface water, and properties of soil and rock. Landform changes occur in response to dynamic processes, including changes in climate, slope formation, fluvial (river) dynamics, coastal dynamics, and deep-seated processes like volcanism, seismicity, and tectonics. Evaluation and analysis of effects of geologic processes to predict their potential effect on land use, development, public health, and public safety. Letter grading.
