Best class at UCLA I've taken. Prof. Phelan is phenomenal! Never have I taken a class more organized or more engaging. He cares about student learning and I walk away from every class feeling a bit inspired. We learn about fun topics such as "why does kindness exist from the context of evolution?" or "how does caffeine physically affect the body?" Do the music video extra credit assignment for fun!
Phelan is one of those legendary professors who's featured in Buzzfeed lists about the best UCLA courses. Every single lecture is like watching a movie, you can tell that he's designed rehearsed every point he teaches to perfection. The course is life science for non-majors, so Phelan only teaches the surprising and useful facts about biology that you can apply to your life. You'll definitely come out of the class with a different outlook on life.
In terms of grading, LS 15 is probably a little tougher than your average GE. The problem sets aren't too bad and they don't change them so if you know a friend who took the class, you can get the answers. Attendance is mandatory for the weekly discussion. You also have to do a group debate during one of the discussions. Tests are pretty straightforward and a mix of multiple choice and short answer. There are so old exams in the SAC test bank so go there if you can before the midterm because some questions get reused. There's also an extra credit opportunity where you can make a music video about something the class covered.
Definitely one of my favorite classes at UCLA, I'd definitely recommend LS 15!
