Lecture, four hours; discussion, two hours; outside study, six hours. Enforced requisite: course 32. Basic principles behind modern two- and three-dimensional computer graphics systems, including complete set of steps that modern graphics pipelines use to create realistic images in real time. How to position and manipulate objects in scene using geometric and camera transformations. How to create final image using perspective and orthographic transformations. Basics of modeling primitives such as polygonal models and implicit and parametric surfaces. Basic ideas behind color spaces, illumination models, shading, and texture mapping. Letter grading.

    This was by far one of the worst and weirdest classes that I took at UCLA. It started out okay, mainly covering linear algebra concepts with some programming assignments and written homework. However, by week 4 it had devolved into one of the most confusing classes I'd taken. Lectures would ramble and then end an hour early. Homeworks would require pages of written matrix transformations. Requirements were unclear and lead to long Piazza threads looking for answers and end up with even more confusion. The midterm was barely comprehensible, and that's what one of the TAs told me about it. I'm honestly surprised I got out with a B. Speaking of which, our TA Garett was the only saving grace about the class. You rock, man. Thanks for getting us through it.

    Luckily, I think everyone from my quarter gave Professor Vasilescu such a bad teaching evaluation that CS department cancelled the following quarter of CS 174A rather than offer it again with her. So you shouldn't see her name pop up as an instructor in the future... but if you do avoid at all costs.
