Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour; outside study, seven hours. Introduction to surfaces and interfaces of engineering materials, particularly catalytic surface and thin films for solid-state electronic devices. Topics include classification of crystals and surfaces, analysis of structure and composition of crystals and their surfaces and interfaces. Examination of engineering applications, including catalytic surfaces, interfaces in microelectronics, and solid-state laser. May be concurrently scheduled with course C116. Letter grading.
