Lecture, two hours; laboratory, six hours; outside study, four hours. Enforced requisite: course 142. Comparison of experimental results with analytical results and code requirements to assess accuracies and limitations of calculation procedures used in structural design. Tests include quasi-static tests of structural elements (beams, columns) and systems (slab-column, beam-column) and dynamic tests of simple building systems. Quasi-static tests focus on assessment of element or subsystem stiffness, strength, and deformation capacity, whereas dynamic tests focus on assessment of periods, mode shapes, and damping. Development of communication skills through preparation of laboratory reports and oral presentations. Letter grading.
