Seminar, one hour. Overview of social, political, and economic instability and unrest that captivated South America in latter half of the 20th century. Discussion of neoliberalism and proliferation of its ideals throughout South America. Focus on Peru to analyze its insurgent guerilla groups, government dictatorships, and economic shocks. Discussion of how indigenous Peruvians resisted one of the bloodiest conflicts in Latin America since European colonization; and the Peruvian diaspora today, now larger than it has ever been and with its core population located in the U.S. Highlights importance of learning about the diverse experiences of South Americans, particularly Andean communities, as a conduit to building an empathy and understanding of complex global issues and recognition of liberation as a transnational struggle.
