Queer Perspective within Contemporary Theater

Seminar, one hour. Exploration of queer artists, voices, and experiences in contemporary American theater and film. Study of contemporary queer history (from Stonewall riots to disco era and HIV/AIDS pandemic impact on queer communities, and into current-day realities) to examine the evolution of contemporary American theater towards representation of queer communities. Definition of essential terms and understandings, exploration of what constitutes the queer community, and study of late 20th-century queer theatrical works that lead to the present. Focus on contemporary theatrical works and identifying how the queer lens affects the pieces. P/NP grading. Facilitated by Isaiah Mateas, with Perry M. Daniel as faculty mentor.
