Seminar, one hour. Exploration of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), loosely defined as a social communication deficit. In the past 20 years, the number of ASD diagnoses has tripled alongside an increased scientific interest in understanding ASD. Exploration of recent developments in genomics and neuroscience and the social and behavioral symptoms associated with ASD. Incorporates a holistic approach to understanding ASD, investigating the reactions and perspectives of the neurodivergent community to new scientific findings and dialogue about the ethics and purpose of scientific research. Study of the landscape of ASD research and discussion of the merits and flaws of current techniques and methodologies. Students develop their individual and collective questions concerning ASD and create opportunities to pursue their interests. Facilitated by Jeffrey Yang, with Leanna M. Hernandez as faculty mentor.
