Italy through Ages in English: Saints and Sinners in Early Modern Italy

Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour. Examination of issues of cultural hegemony, political and religious freedom, and doctrinal conflict through Italy's early modern literary and artistic production. Texts may include Dante's Divine Comedy, Boccaccio's Decameron, Saint Catherine's letters, Machiavelli's The Prince, and Galileo's scientific writings. Artworks may include those of Raphael and Michelangelo, as well as Bernini's sculptures. P/NP or letter grading.
