Language Development and Socialization
(Same as Psychology M149.) Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Exploration of processes through which children learn structures and practices of language and become competent participants in linguistic and social worlds around them. Examination of language use and socialization over childhood, across communities of practice, and across different ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Bridges work from anthropology, psychology, linguistics, and cognitive science. Topics include cross-cultural perspectives on child development and wide range of methodological approaches. Examination of ways in which language development and socialization interface with culture, modality, inequality, education, and cognition. P/NP or letter grading.
