(Same as Chicana/o and Central American Studies M159B.) Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Designed for juniors/seniors. Survey lecture course on historical development of Mexican (Chicano) community and people of Mexican descent in U.S. through 20th century, with special focus on labor and politics. Provides integrated understanding of change over time in Mexican community by inquiry into major formative historical and policy issues affecting community. Within framework of domination and resistance, discussion deals with social structure, economy, labor, culture, political organization, conflict, and ideology. Developments related to historical events of significance occurring both in U.S. and Mexico. Lectures, special presentations, reading assignments, written examinations, library and/or field research, and submission of paper. P/NP or letter grading.
