Korea and Vietnam: Comparative Modern Histories
(Same as Vietnamese M186.) Seminar, three hours. Comparative survey of intertwined and parallel histories of Korea and Vietnam, organized chronologically, but structured around key themes that serve as basis for comparison. Modern experiences of colonized Vietnam and Korea have many significant parallels, including imposition of colonial control, transition to modernized societies within context of colonialism, and shared experiences of World War II. Both were also divided after war between communist regimes in north and strongly anticommunist regimes in south. Each also experienced warfare after division and direct involvement of U.S. during height of cold war between 1950s and 1970s. P/NP or letter grading.
