Modernism, Modernity, and Identity

Lecture, four hours. Requisite: course 25 or 26 or 27. Examination of concepts and practice of modernism in Portuguese-speaking world, with primary focus on 1920s. Reading and discussion, with emphasis on sociohistorical context, relations with European avant-garde, modernist poetics and polemics, and search for national identity as expressed in period's poetry and prose. May be repeated for credit with topic change. P/NP or letter grading.
