Languages of Los Angeles

Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Comprehensive interdisciplinary investigation of Los Angeles as multilingual and multicultural metropolis Review and analysis of features of major linguistic communities in Los Angeles area (Armenian, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, and others), with particular attention to social and cultural factors that play role in maintenance of language used in any given ethnic group. Familiarization with discipline and methodology of urban linguistics as part of urban geographical studies and as tool for investigating growing linguistic and cultural diversity of America's large cities.
