Introduction to Eurasia

Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Interdisciplinary survey of Eurasia. Introduction to history, culture, and geography of diverse area that is often vaguely understood as not quite Europe and not quite Asia, yet both at the same time home to several of history's most powerful overland empires, as well as its most notorious figures: Genghis Khan, Alexander the Great, Ivan the Terrible, and others. Exploration of contemporary issues in modern states of Russia, China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Iran, and Azerbaijan. P/NP or letter grading.
