Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Theory of meaning and its relationship to philosophy more generally; nature, origins, and acquisition of language. Additional topics may include nonlinguistic and nonhuman systems of communication; theories of interpretation in law, literature, and art; use of theoretical terms in science.
