Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Introduction to sociocultural changes in China from 1949 to present. Topics include ideology and politics in everyday life, social stratification and mobility, cultural construction of socialist person, changes in courtship, marriage, and family, and political economy of reforms in post-Mao era.
