Lecture, three hours; fieldwork. Requisite: course 4. Designed for juniors/seniors. Course has two interrelated objectives: (1) to introduce students to ethnography of communication--description and analysis of situated communicative behavior--and sociocultural knowledge that it reflects and (2) to train students to recognize, describe, and analyze relevant linguistic, proxemic, and kinesic aspects of face-to-face interaction.
