Evolution of Language
(Same as Anthropology M124R.) Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Recommended preparation: Anthropology 1 or 4 or Linguistics 1. Designed for juniors and seniors. How did human capacity for language evolve? Examination of origin of human language from biological, comparative, developmental, social and computational perspectives. Topics include evolutionary theory, linguistic structure, gesture and speech, animal communication, language learning, language disorders, and computational models of language emergence. P/NP or letter grading.
