The textbook is mandatory I guess since that is where the homework problems are. The textbook was also way more helpful than lecture in my opinion. Lecture was very boring and just him basically reading off slides so I never really paid attention and just taught myself using the textbook while doing the homework. There is iclicker but location was not required and he was very generous with the amount of iclicker you actually needed to do to get 100%. I think you only needed to do 60% of the iclicker and I missed alot but still got all my points. So lecture does not required attendance since u can just do iclicker at home during lecture time. Discussions attendance is not required and since i had a 9am Friday one I never went. There is extra credit offered by doing these surveys about TAs/LAs and one about the class. You can also recover points on the midterm by redoing problems you got wrong. He gave study guides for the exams and I guess the midterm ones were sort of like the actual midterms but the final study guide was NOTHING like the actual final. The final also had like 20 pages. I feel like if I actually paid attention in lecture and went to discussion I may have passed with an A. Not sure how helpful discussion is but the worksheets were kinda of hard so it would have been helpful to go to discussion for help.

Nava was new but a good professor! He provided us with practice midterms that were helpful on the midterm and rounded the class up significantly

I absolutely loved this class. Professor Nava was a super approachable guy and even curved the grades HEAVILY at the end of the course. Lectures were basically the same as the readings. Practice midterms and final were structured similarly to the actual exams. Overall, a great first chemistry class to take. Would 100% recommend Nava!

The homework is very helpful and helps you understand the topics. There are two in-class midterms for 50 minutes. He provides extra credit opportunities for exams by letting you correct what you did wrong and get a 1/4 of a point back. iClicker attendance is taken!!

Pretty nice guy. Used clickers so attendance was required but he only required 60 percent of clicker so you can skip a few days

Class was good. Exams were fair, just need to study the given materials and understand concepts.

Really enjoyed chem with Nava, not sure if he still teaches it but highly recommend him if so. He adjusted midterm grades after seeing the results and realizing he had made the test too difficult, listened to feedback, and communicated with TAs so they could help us study for the midterms and final. The order of the material was kind of weird (he started with quantum mechanics) but after those first two weeks everything was fairly easy, and he provided study guides for the tests which represented the material well.
