Shao goes very quickly during lectures, but she is very helpful during office hours, and while her midterms were fairly difficult, her final was extremely reasonable.
lecture went really fast but overall not a bad class
The class presentation and content organization was extremely methodical and easily accessible, as she records her lectures and posts material. The content is difficult, but that's just mainly the nature of the class and not her fault as much. She was lenient with tests and made our final open note.
The lectures are well organized but very fast, so going into them you may need to prepare beforehand or listen to recordings afterward. Our midterms and finals were in person, but were open note and she provided ample extra credit!
It was fine, the concepts are a little more physics based and confusing at first. But the midterm and the final should be fine as long as you get enough practice with the problems.
She is by far the best Chem professor I’ve ever had here!!
The content was not easy, but Shao was great & her grading scale was very forgiving.
Enjoyed the class
Prof Shao is really sweet and attendance isn't mandatory. There is however, a lot of material. Be prepared to work hard!
Chem 20A is a challenging class in general but Shao did a pretty good job organizing the class. She was extremely fair with the homework, it was online and you had multiple attempts to get full points on. This also helped to learn the material and helped with your grades. Going to section is pretty important because the TA will go over key topics for the worksheets which helps answering the questions. The exams were difficult but the grading wasn't too harsh and if you look over the examples in the lectures and worksheets you can get a good idea of what to expect even if they aren't identical. So, the exams were fair but you need to manage your time well and make sure to do practice problems to do well. She also offered around 3% of extra credit by answering survey questions throughout the quarter.
