The class in general is pretty easy, though some of the material covered is different from high school chemistry (quantum mechanics especially). The textbook is a bit confusing and hard-to-read, but super useful since it gives a more quantitative view of the topics while Deifel gives a more qualitative one. Deifel is a really fun teacher and you can contact him basically any time over text. He'll even come at night to do office hours with you.
Deifel is a really nice person who teaches well in his office hours, but doesn't understand how to keep an entire lecture of 300 people on the same page. While I wouldn't recommend his class, I will say that it was a much easier experience than some of the other lecturers on campus, so if you need to take chemistry and get it out of the way, definitely take Deifel.
Diefel is an amazing professor and made me actually want to take up for an 8am chem lecture. There are no recordings but material slides are posted as well as recommended textbook readings. His exams are fair and he even holds review sessions himself that help a ton for the exams. Overall an amazing class with him!
I didn't enjoy the lectures as it took place at 8am, but I enjoyed the way the professor taught the class. He was all over the place, but it was clear that he cared about what he taught. I strongly recommend going to office hours in order to fully understand the concepts.
Deifel not only taught the class well, but is also a funny and down to earth guy. Sometimes a bit disorganized
Coming into my first quarter at UCLA, I had very low expectations for a chem professor. I've heard many tales and legends of horrible chemistry professors at UCLA and the difficulty of the chemistry program as a whole. For me, I really disliked chemistry since the only time I took it was sophomore year of high school on zoom. Because of that, this was a class I thought I would absolutely suffer in. Two lectures in, I knew my mindset about chemistry would change. Deifel is the most caring professor you will ever meet. He genuinely cares about his students and will help you if you reach out. He won't let you fail. Additionally, he is one of the most knowledgeable professors I have ever talked to; he could probably teach any class in the chemistry department. He is very clear when outlining exactly what he wants you to know and take away from this class. Overall, I wish he was teaching Chem 20B because that would have been a no brainer for me to enroll in.
