This class was definitely not easy, but the professor made it doable. We had two midterm - both were very proof-based, and our final was more computational (likely due to the TA strike). The professor was very clear in his steps and instructions, but sometimes glossed over examples and proofs by saying they would be "left as an exercise". Attendance in discussion sections were mandatory and recorded as part of our grade (by working on the worksheets twice each week). Homework always took a long time to complete, since they were mostly proofs with 6-10 problems each week on average. Overall, my experience wasn't too bad - just make sure to keep up on the work.
Excellent teacher any math student should want to have a class with him.
He is a decent lecturer, and curved every exam. I did bad on both midterms and still ended with a B+
This was one of the better math classes I took at UCLA, mostly because of the professor. I hate proofs, but this prof is so good at explaining things. He's super organized and really cares about his students. He's always willing to meet outside of class to go over things and his tests are questions that you've seen before on the homework--so very reasonable. If you have to take 115A I would strongly recommended you take it with Brian.
pretty cool prof. two midterms and they were based off the homework
Overall very straightforward class. Midterms and Finals heavily based on homework material, and generally you would be fine if you knew how to do the homework. Homework itself was quite rigorously graded, but both professor and TA were willing to provide solutions during office hours. Lectures not recorded, but notes would be posted. Overall quite a good professor imo.
Brian Shin is one of the best math professors in the entire department. The class is still a little difficult, but he makes the material very digestible. He offers fantastic notes so if you miss something in class it is very easy to review on your own later without getting lost in a textbook. I recommend also going to discussion, and to also work on your computations. When I took him, he never graded computations on homework, but I got burned by this on exams.
