Professor Moore-Cantwell is great. Her slides were clear and straightforward, and the material itself wasn't too difficult. She encouraged asking questions during lecture (online, over Zoom) and was generally very helpful. I recommend forming a study group to go over the homework. Exams weren't too bad, although definitely review previous assignments beforehand. Great class!
I loved this class! I had no prior knowledge of linguistics, so it was a bit overwhelming at times -- the lectures are full of information so it's a lot to take in, but the professor explained things very clearly and did many helpful examples/practice problems in lecture. I learned a lot of cool stuff I had never known about before! Also, the professor was very receptive to student feedback -- when we were about to go in-person, she did a poll asking whether students wanted to stay online or go in-person, and most students voted online, so we stayed online. It was great because since the online lectures were recorded, I didn't have to wake up at 7 AM for class. Also, I liked how there was no textbook. All the content was just based on the lectures.
The workload was reasonable; there was one homework a week, and each took me about an hour to do. However, the TA you have matters a lot since TA's grade the homework and some are considerably more lenient than others. I was fortunate enough to have a lenient TA. Also, the late work policy is pretty flexible. You're allowed 5 late days and the lowest homework is dropped. I'd recommend saving your late days and drop for the end of the quarter since that's probably when you'll need them most.
The midterm and final weren't that bad. I liked how you didn't need to memorize much for them; they were more about skills and practical applications than content. This made it so that I didn't need to study as much. The professor herself said that if you do well on the homeworks, you won't need that much outside study for the exams.
Discussion sections were optional. They're good for solidying your knowledge, but I personally didn't find them necessary. I stopped going to discussion after the first week.
Overall, I'd highly recommend this class! After taking this class, I'm excited to take more linguistics courses at UCLA.
